TEAK DECKING

Teak Decking on Plywood

In modern wooden boat building and in the restoration of classic yachts, the boat deck is usually made of marine plywood and then covered with a wooden deck. A proven construction method – but only safe if it is made impossible for moisture to penetrate the plywood deck.

Plywood

Building boats from wood is synonymous with the beginnings of yacht building in general - wood as a boat building material has stood the test of time. However, construction methods have evolved and modern wooden boat building has largely replaced the traditional one. Today, almost every classic yacht has a teak deck, and it is precisely these boats that look particularly good with the elegant decking: no deck construction method gives a yacht more class than a curved deck made of teak.

Instead of attaching sturdy deck planks directly to the deck beams in the traditional way, marine plywood is now increasingly being used as the deck and support for the marine deck. A layer of plywood is attached to the deck beams, beam walkers and slings, on which the teak deck is mounted.

Challenges with teak decking on plywood

Boatbuilding plywood used as deck and support for the bar deck is unfortunately susceptible to moisture penetration. Once water has found its way to the plywood, even the best material dissolves within a few years!

It's all about the right protection

We only install modern teak decks with moisture barrier on plywood decks. A moisture barrier stops penetrating moisture before it can reach the plywood deck. This extends the life of a plywood deck many times over.

Opt for a modern teak deck for optimum protection of your plywood beams - so that you have the water under your keel and not in the plywood.

Teak decking revolution:

Permanent Protection through a moisture barrier

Conventional construction: Moisture (blue) can penetrate the plywood deck through a damaged deck seam. The boatbuilding plywood absorbs the water and often decomposes unnoticed over a large area under the teak deck.

Our construction method with a moisture barrier: Moisture penetrating through a damaged deck seam is stopped by the epoxy resin moisture barrier (green). The plywood deck remains permanently protected.
